KYM NACITA
Care Doula
WHO IS KYM?
My name is Kym Nacita (she/her) and I am a queer immigrant care doula.
I immigrated from the Philippines at a young age and was raised in Ontario on the traditional territory of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, the Haudenosaunee Confederacy and the Huron-Wendat and Wyandot Nations. I currently reside in K'jipuktuk (Halifax, Nova Scotia), on the unceded and ancestral lands of the Mi’kmaq people.
My post-secondary school experience includes a Bachelor of Arts Degree with Honours (Geography) from Queen’s University and a college diploma in Social Service Work from St. Lawrence College, both located in Kingston, Ontario. During my post-secondary schooling, I volunteered for a number of non-profit organizations including a shelter for people escaping gender-based violence, hospice, long-term care facilities and an HIV/AIDS services center focusing on advocacy, education, and harm reduction.
In 2014, I pivoted to a culinary career that would span almost 10 years, throughout three different provinces. I also began working part-time as a care doula of sorts, as a companion to clients on outings, as an executive functioning assistant or as a cook when needed. With this, alongside my volunteer work history led me to the Death Doula course by Home Hospice Association. While in the course, I continued to take on clients and finally settled on the term Care Doula to explain what I do. As birth doulas and death doulas help/move an individual and their family through a particular life event, care doulas work with individuals and their families to understand what care means for them and to ease their life during these health-related events.
I have been working on Serving Spoonies in one way or another for a very long time, amassing the experience and knowledge I need to be thoughtful and understanding in this work. I am always open and excited to learn new strategies of what works with each individual client.
PHILOSOPHY
You deserve the time and effort to be cared for. You are a whole person. I am a whole person. Let’s communicate from this understanding. You are worth investing in yourself and your health.
FLEXIBILITY WITH TIME
and SLIDING SCALE COST
BELIEF SYSTEMS
Our right to our own body
Our right to dictate how our bodies are talked about, related to, and touched
Our right to have a say in our own care that is based on up to date information
Our right to healthcare that reflects our own beliefs
Our ability to understand ourselves better than anyone else and that we are capable of asking for the things we need when we need them
Our right to live and to die in dignity
WORKING TOGETHER
Your identity dictates how you experience the world. We can teach each other as we go. I am trying to work myself out of a job = if I can set your space/life up so you need me less and less, that’s okay!! I am glad to ensure that the systems we put in place (space, care network, written plans) are sustainable and work with the life you want for yourself - if you need me for a long time, that’s okay too!
LIFE HAPPENS
High pain day? Too difficult to deal with a person in your space? Need me for longer? Let’s communicate in an honest and timely manner and I will do my best to meet your needs.
